Ian Passam

"In all my work, I strive to show the simple, profound act of sitting still and savoring the peace of a place."

Interest

Open skies, changing weather conditions and the landscape without people.

To have the time to sit and immerse yourself in the landscape without distraction is a truly wonderful thing. To be inspired by the places we see and the desire to record this experience through drawing and painting makes the event that much more personal. My sketchbook drawing is always more experimental and driven my the emotion of a place, whereas my painting is more considered and cautious.

Journey through sketchbooks

As long as time permits the sketchbook remains my first love. Working in pencil or watercolour when out in the landscape or producing studies of artists work on a gallery visit.

Light and colour

Natural light, open skies, early mornings, the beginnings of a storm all have an impact on the way in which we use and see colour.

Featured Highlights

Explore the essence of nature through my highlighted works. Each piece is a representation of my journeys and the landscapes that inspire them.

Watercolour

A medium I often use on location. A great way to stay visually active without the time and setup oil painting demands. The transparency and luminosity it offers me a contrast to the density of oils

Oil Painting

A medium where my work is still constantly evolving between subtle thin layering of paint to thicker areas of impasto and mark making.  The contrast between these two approaches — subtlety and physicality — suggests a willingness to let the medium breathe and shift as the painting evolves, which is deeply compelling.

Drawing

Drawing is at the centre of everything I love about the subject of recording from nature. It embeds the subject in your memory far more deeply than taking a photo.

Gallery

My travels have taken me to many places over the years across much of the UK and Ireland as well as Italy, France and the USA.
